Welcome to our Blog

A little about us. A little about the blog

Welcome to our kitchen, where we discuss art, science, philosophy and the politics of food! And by the way, we will also talk great taste, health & wellness and raise a toast to an eclectic palate. Because, basically we believe: We Eat. Therefore we are.

Meera and Ashok met in the summer of 1980 in Chennai and were married two years later.  We wound our way over the next several years from Chennai to Mumbai to New Delhi pursuing our independent careers and found ourselves ten years later in Stamford CT, our home ever since.

At our farm in the Tasty Bite campus outside Pune, India

Over the years even as we each developed our own special interests our common abiding passion was food. In hindsight, it is no surprise we co-founded our company Preferred Brands International, which today is a US, Australia and India-based Food Company that manufactures and markets Tasty Bite a range of natural, convenient, specialty foods that includes entrees, sauces, noodles, and rices.

So it should be no surprise, that we would co-create a food blog. Only, that we waited so long.  However, we hasten to add that this is not a blog on Tasty Bite or on other aspects of our company. Having said that, we also confess that it would be impossible for us to totally separate our work from the pleasure of this blog.

Meera loves art as Ashok does science. And food is an area where art and science are not just synergistic. They are symbiotic. And both of us love to cook. We seem to spend a lot of our hours at home in the kitchen. So much so, that Meera is convinced we should just live in the kitchen and rent out the rest of our home!

Once again, welcome to our kitchen. Come explore this space along with us, contribute your ideas, start a debate, share a recipe or a remedy and celebrate the joys of vegetarian food.

  1. Thanks for sharing your passion and thoughts. I am going to try your suggestion of using Tumeric as a topical application for the skin.

    1. thanks Vasu and Meera; excellent idea for a blog. Esp the section on Kitchen Pharma. A lot of our problems have simple solutions .... we are what we eat.

  2. A very inviting blog. First and fast reading was a 'Tasty Bite' for sure. Hungry to participate and will do so, when I revisit. Food prepared with love is divine to the palate!

  3. A confluence of science and art, a symphony of knowledge and experience, a labour of love and much more, from the “Awesome Twosome”! The wealth of information and references is staggering and is a reflection of the exhaustive research into the geographical, medicinal, calorific and nutritional value of several herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables. The recipes are a vegetarian’s delight.

  4. Kudos! How many hours do you both have in your day exactly?! A delightful medley of articles, characteristically well researched and written, and giving us readers "food for thought", if you'll pardon the pun. The passion for all things food comes across clearly

  5. Hi Meera and Ashok,
Congratulations!! I like your blog and am a follower now!
Here is a little present for you - my favourite recipe and I am sure you will like it too.

Here is a recipe that follows the style of the Thai salad dressing but we use all kinds of citrus fruits. Think of all the Vitamin C and how good it is for the skin!!!
    1 teaspoon cumin seeds
    1 teaspoon coriander seeds
    2 tablespoons chopped mint leaves
1 stalk lemon grass, finely shredded
    1 red chillie, finely chopped
    60 ml lemon juice
1 orange, peeled and segmented, with all pith removed and reserving any juices
1 mandarin orange, peeled and segmented
1 pink grapefruit, peeled and segmented, with all pith removed and reserving any juices
300 g pomelo, segmented and broken into chunks
1 Dry roast the cumin and coriander seeds and pound them to a fine
2 Place pounded spice, mint leaves, chopped lemon grass, chillie and
    juice together a combine well.
3 Pour over the bowl of mixed citrus. Toss well and serve immediately
    or chilled.
