This species is globally distributed in the tropics and cultivated for the edible fruits. Within India, it is wild or semi-wild nearly throughout the tropical and sub-tropical hilly forests, particularly near the rivers and ravines.
It is common in the sub-tropical Himalayas, hills of western and eastern ghats and the forests of Central India, Bihar, Orissa, Assam, and the Andaman Islands.
It is grown in plantation and orchards, but more often in home gardens, field borders, and roadside avenues.
